Sonneck Society for American Music

Bulletin, Volume XXV, no. 2 (Summer 1999)

A Change in Name, Not in Mission

The new corporate name for the Sonneck Society has become Society for American Music. The Sonneck Society was founded in 1975 in honor of Oscar G.T. Sonneck, the first critical scholar and bibliographer of American Music. The name change was adopted by its membership at the Society's annual conference in March. The members of the Society believe that the new name will help to communicate more efficiently the Society's mission, which is "to stimulate the appreciation, performance, creation, and study of American music in all its historical and contemporary styles and contexts, including, but not limited to, art and popular music, the music of ethnic groups and minorities, and the full range of activities associated with music. "America" is understood to embrace North Ameria, including Central America and the Caribbean, and aspects of its cultures elsewhere in the world." The title of the Bulletin published three times annually by the Society will not change until Volume 26 of the year 2000.
