We Stand in Solidarity!

The Board of the Society for American Music stands in solidarity with racial, ethnic, and religious communities who have been targeted with violence. We condemn the murders of Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, George Floyd and many others. These incidents are representative of a history of discrimination directed at racial, ethnic and religious communities, and they are antithetical to our core values and beliefs as an organization. We are especially troubled that the precipitating events for the recent protests transpired in Minneapolis, the city in which we were to meet this past Spring. As scholars, performers, and supporters of music and music making in the Americas, we recognize and support the role of music in protests, its role in the pursuit of justice, and its ability to heal and unite communities in times of struggle. We pledge as a Board to work toward equity and positive social change wherever and whenever possible. All of us have a role to play as we move together to a more just society.
