Charles Hiroshi Garrett Fellowship for Research on Music and Racial/Social Justice

This fellowship honors the memory and contributions, as a scholar and a mentor, of Charles Hiroshi Garrett, Professor of Musicology at the University of Michigan and a longtime member of the Society for American Music.

This fellowship is awarded competitively to scholars at any phase of their careers in support of research on the intersection of music with issues of social and racial justice in the Americas, broadly defined.

The fellowship may be used for expenses associated with archival or ethnographic research, including but not limited to travel expenses, research related materials, and media resources.

No more than one award will be offered in each yearly cycle. The amount of the award each cycle will vary depending on the interest generated by the endowment. The maximum award is $5,000.

A one-page budget and a final report will be submitted by the recipient to the Executive Director of the Society no more than one year after the award is presented.

Applicants must be members in good standing of the Society for American Music.

In addition to the application form, please provide the following materials:

• A one-page letter of application with contact information (including mailing address, phone number, and email address)
• A current full CV
• A narrative of no more than five pages (double-spaced) that describes the scope of the project and the need for funding, including an accounting of past fellowships or awards received which have included financial funding
• A one-page budget for the project
