Our annual conferences give members of the Society for American Music the opportunity to share ideas, discover new perspectives, and learn about the latest research in the field. From city to city, these events bring together scholars, performers, educators, students, and others who are passionate about the musics of the Americas in a welcoming, supportive, and collegial space. In addition to formal papers, the conference offers workshops, roundtables, panel discussions, concerts, and other special events that showcase the musical and cultural life of the host community.
Just as important as what happens on the program is what happens between paper sessions: conversations over coffee in the exhibit space, meals shared with old friends and new colleagues, impromptu discussions about shared research interests, and the chance to encounter big ideas and fascinating people. Whether you are presenting your first paper, chairing a panel, attending a Perlis concert, hopping on the bus for an excursion, or simply listening and connecting, the SAM conference offers many ways to participate.
Each conference is different, shaped by its host city and the interests and energy of its attendees—but all are opportunities to learn, to be inspired, to share your work, and to be part of a thriving, vibrant community.
